Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, visited the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, where he presented the ‘On the Spot Unit Citation’ to INS Sharda for its effective execution of anti-piracy operations. The vessel played a crucial role in the safe release of all 19 crew members (11 Iranian & 08 Pakistani) of the Iranian fishing vessel Omari, which had been seized by pirates off the East coast of Somalia.
INS Sharda was assigned to investigate the hijacking of the Iranian fishing vessel Omari based on surveillance information from naval RPA. The ship intercepted the vessel and maintained discreet surveillance throughout the night. At dawn on February 2nd, 2024, the ship’s helicopter and Prahar team were deployed. The assertive stance of the ship compelled the pirates to release the crew and vessel unharmed. This swift and decisive action led to the successful rescue of the hijacked fishing vessel and its crew from Somali pirates. The unwavering dedication of INS Sharda, deployed for anti-piracy operations, saved valuable lives at sea, reinforcing the Indian Navy’s commitment to enhancing security and safeguarding seafarers in the Indian Ocean Region.
During his interaction with Team Sharda, the CNS praised their prompt response to the piracy incident, which ensured the safe and successful execution of operations at sea despite challenging circumstances. In his remarks, he lauded the professionalism of the crew, which has earned the Indian Navy recognition and admiration as the preferred security partner in the region.
