NITI Aayog unveils a position paper on reforming senior care in India, envisioning a shift in the paradigm of elderly care

NITI Aayog revealed a position paper titled “Revolutionizing Senior Care in India: Rethinking the Senior Care Paradigm” on February 16, 2024. The release event was led by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, accompanied by Member (Health) Dr. Vinod K. Paul, CEO B. V. R. Subrahmanyam, and Department of Social Justice and Empowerment (DoSJE) Secretary Saurabh Garg.

Key attendees included Ms. L. S. Changsan (AS&MD, MoHFW), Shri Rajib Sen (Senior Adviser, NITI Aayog), Ms. Monali P. Dhakate (Joint Secretary, DoSJE), and Ms. Kavita Garg (Joint Secretary, M/o Ayush).

Vice Chairman Suman Bery emphasized the report’s role in India’s commitment to achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat @2047. He stressed the need to prioritize technology and Artificial Intelligence for senior care, urging consideration of special dimensions beyond medical and social aspects.

Member (Health) NITI Aayog Dr. V.K. Paul underscored the importance of making aging dignified, safe, and productive. CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam highlighted the critical role of family and family values in creating a healthy aging ecosystem, praising the report’s policy directives for healthy aging.

Secretary DoSJE Saurabh Garg emphasized the report as a call to action, focusing on aging with dignity, at home, and productively, covering social, economic, and health aspects.

The position paper’s recommendations span empowerment, service delivery, and inclusions in four core areas: Health, Social, Economic/Financial, and Digital. It aims to expand senior care by recognizing evolving needs, proposing a comprehensive strategy for an effective senior care policy.
