The Ministry of Defence inked a deal with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on March 15, 2024, for the Mid Life Upgrade (MLU) of 25 Dornier Aircraft and related equipment for the Indian Navy, amounting to Rs.2,890 crore.
The MLU for Dornier Aircraft encompasses an enhancement to integrate cutting-edge Avionics Systems and Primary Role sensors. This upgrade is poised to notably augment the operational capabilities of Indian Navy Dornier aircraft, enabling them to effectively execute Primary Roles such as Maritime Surveillance, Coastal Surveillance, Electronic Intelligence, and the development of Maritime Domain Awareness. Furthermore, this enhancement will empower Indian Navy Dorniers to undertake Secondary Roles such as Search and Rescue, Medical/Casualty Evacuation, and Communication Link.
The Mid Life Upgrade (MLU) of 25 Dornier Aircraft is anticipated to generate employment for 1.8 lakh Man-days over its 6.5-year implementation period. This indigenous upgrade involves the procurement of major systems and equipment from local sources, thereby making a substantial contribution to “Atmanirbharta” in Defence, in alignment with the Make-in-India initiative of the Government of India.
