The Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system underwent a successful flight test around 0830 hrs on May 01, 2024, from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. SMART represents a next-generation lightweight torpedo delivery system utilizing missiles, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to significantly extend the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities beyond the traditional range of lightweight torpedoes.
This canister-based missile system comprises advanced subsystems including a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, and precision inertial navigation system. It carries an advanced lightweight torpedo as its payload, equipped with a parachute-based release system.
The missile was launched from a ground mobile launcher, with various state-of-the-art mechanisms such as symmetric separation, ejection, and velocity control being validated during the test.
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh praised DRDO and its industry partners for the successful flight test of SMART, emphasizing that the system’s development will further bolster the Indian Navy’s capabilities.
Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, commended the collaborative efforts of the entire SMART team and encouraged them to maintain their pursuit of excellence.
