Continuing the centennial celebrations of Admiral RL Pereira, PVSM, AVSM (1923-1993), the Indian Navy and St Joseph’s School (North Point), Darjeeling collaborated on commemorative events held at the school campus on March 15, 2024. Admiral Pereira, affectionately known as ‘Ronnie P,’ who served as the 9th Chief of the Naval Staff in 1979, was an alumnus of the School from 1932-37. The school honored Admiral Pereira’s legacy by organizing a football tournament and an essay writing competition. Festivities ensued at the school, with a team of officers from Naval Headquarters participating in the celebrations. Cdr Anup Thomas shared insights into Admiral Pereira’s life, while Cdr Gurbir Singh discussed India’s maritime history and exciting career prospects in the Navy with over 800 students. The visiting officers engaged with students and faculty, addressing their queries about career paths in the Indian Navy. Additionally, the Indian Navy established a ‘Rolling Sports Trophy’ and scholarship in Admiral Pereira’s memory, presenting a cheque of Rs 2.5 lakhs to the school. As a tribute, the visiting officers and faculty planted a tree in memory of Admiral RL Pereira. Father Stanley Varghese, Principal and Rector of the school, honored the visiting Naval officers.
